This is Mr. Jones, Superintendent of Sierra Grande School District. I’m asking for your help as we renew our focus on School Wellness Policy ADF-R and the healthy habits we model for our students.
Over time, energy drinks, soda, candy, chips, Takis, cupcakes, high-sugar snacks, and fast/outside food have become a regular part of the school day. Our goal is not to eliminate treats or outside food, but simply to be more mindful of what we offer and choose.
I’ll be the first to admit that I don’t always make the healthiest choice either. Personally, when our salad bar is offered, I find that I eat healthier. Sometimes simply having healthier options available makes it easier to make a better choice.
As a former PE and health teacher, I know that what we model as adults matters. Let’s encourage more water, fruits, vegetables, yogurt, cheese, whole-grain snacks, and other nutritious options while making energy drinks and high-sugar foods the exception rather than the norm.
Our school meals will continue to follow Colorado Department of Education nutrition requirements, and we will continue offering our salad bar with a variety of choices for students.
This isn’t about being perfect or taking away an occasional treat. It’s about being mindful of our offerings and helping our students develop healthy habits that can last a lifetime.
Let’s make healthy choices our everyday choices and treats our occasional choices.
Thank you for your support,
Kevin A. Jones

🍎 Middle & High School Families — Important Morning Schedule Update! 🚌
This school year, middle and high school students will eat breakfast beginning at 7:25 a.m., before the first bell. Elementary students will report to their regular classes when they arrive.
To make sure students have time to enjoy breakfast, buses will unload at 7:25 a.m., which is about 5 minutes earlier than in previous years. This means buses will also run their usual routes approximately 5 minutes earlier, so please plan for students to be ready a few minutes sooner each morning. 🚌⏰
🔔 First Bell (All Students): 7:40 a.m.
⏰ Tardy Bell: 7:44 a.m.
Also, keep an eye out for our new drop-off procedure video coming soon!
Thank you, families, for helping us make this small adjustment to our morning routine. We’re looking forward to a great school year! 💙📚
