Building Stronger Communities Together
Mark your calendars! The SLV Collaboration Summit is happening September 18–19 at the Ski-Hi Complex in Monte Vista — and everyone in our community is welcome to attend!
Two days packed with keynote speakers, panel discussions, and breakout sessions all focused on building stronger, more connected communities in the San Luis Valley.
🌟 Don't miss Family Night on Friday, September 18th from 4:00–6:00 PM — a fun community event with local organizations on hand to share resources and connect with families.
💚 Are you part of an organization that would like a table at Family Night?
SLV Community Solutions would love to have you! Email dj@slvcs.org to let them know you're interested.
Thank you to our sponsors — Colorado Health Foundation, LOR Foundation, and Sand Dunes Recreation — for making this event possible.
Hope to see you in Monte Vista! 🌻

This is Mr. Jones, Superintendent of Sierra Grande School District. I’m asking for your help as we renew our focus on School Wellness Policy ADF-R and the healthy habits we model for our students.
Over time, energy drinks, soda, candy, chips, Takis, cupcakes, high-sugar snacks, and fast/outside food have become a regular part of the school day. Our goal is not to eliminate treats or outside food, but simply to be more mindful of what we offer and choose.
I’ll be the first to admit that I don’t always make the healthiest choice either. Personally, when our salad bar is offered, I find that I eat healthier. Sometimes simply having healthier options available makes it easier to make a better choice.
As a former PE and health teacher, I know that what we model as adults matters. Let’s encourage more water, fruits, vegetables, yogurt, cheese, whole-grain snacks, and other nutritious options while making energy drinks and high-sugar foods the exception rather than the norm.
Our school meals will continue to follow Colorado Department of Education nutrition requirements, and we will continue offering our salad bar with a variety of choices for students.
This isn’t about being perfect or taking away an occasional treat. It’s about being mindful of our offerings and helping our students develop healthy habits that can last a lifetime.
Let’s make healthy choices our everyday choices and treats our occasional choices.
Thank you for your support,
Kevin A. Jones
