Sierra Grande Cinco de Mayo
How can we celebrate Cinco de Mayo without Folklorico dancers? Mr. Gonzalez has worked extremely long hours for weeks to put together a day to honor and celebrate Mexican Culture. He did this by having a group of students learn Folklorico dances. He has been working since January with a group of 24 students including: Ariel Gonzalez-PreK, Janae Gonzalez-PreK, Layla Hobbs-PreK, Yaretzy Gonzalez-K, Nicholas Hobbs-K, Valeria Martinez-K, Dayanara Cepeda Esquer-K, Cindy Sandoval-K, Dale Vigil-K, Odalys Gonzalez-1st, Andre Gonzalez-1st, Zaine DeLeon-1st, Jayir Gonzalez-4th, Daniel Gonzalez-4th, Lazailo DeLeon-4th, Serenity Wood-4th, Lyla Gerardo-4th, Alaina Huerta-5th, Areeya Gonzalez-5th, Alondra Gonzalez-5th, Branden Martinez-5th, Michael Martinez-5th, Kayo DeLeon-7th, & Bogar Quezada-8th.
Teaching them 3 songs from the region of Jalisco including: El Gavilancillo, La Negra, and Machetes. Mr. Gonzalez's goal is to keep traditions alive and passed on to the newer generations. Adams State University, Semillas de La Tierra also performed a total of 5 dances including 2 from Nayarit: El Buey, Jarabe de Nayarit as well as 3 from Aguascalientes: Las Deshiladoras, Viva Aguascalientes, La Pelea de Gallos.
Sierra Grande also hosted our first ever Lectura en Familia (Family literacy night) which included 6 teachers delivering literacy or art skills to the SG School community. The teachers modeled and implemented the teaching strategies of gradual release model as well as hands-on activity through art engaging lessons. Dinner was served to the participants. This was a meal prepared by our local cafeteria staff. This meal was also done to help honor Mexican Culture. A delicious bowl of Posole with all the toppings, chips and salsa, horchata and for dessert an amazing pastel Tres Leches was served.
A special thank you to all the people who helped this event be possible as it takes a village. Special thanks to our Master of Ceremonies, Mr. Luis Murillo, Assistant Superintendent of Alamosa School District. Thank you to our sponsors: Migrant Education Program, Gregory Gorman Family & Cosmetic Dentistry, Silvia Martinez, as well as Fort Garland Museum & Cultural Center for supporting our such a great event. Without the support of everyone this event would not have been possible.
